Dubai Advances Towards Next-Generation Urban Transport

Dubai is poised to become the second city globally, after Las Vegas , to roll out a high-speed underground transport network known as the Dubai Loop . The project, announced during the World Government Summit , reflects Dubai’s strategy to modernise urban mobility, reduce surface congestion, and introduce cutting-edge transport technologies in high-density zones.


Project Vision and Official Announcement

The initiative was unveiled by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). RTA Director General Matar Al Tayer described the Dubai Loop as a landmark mobility project designed to link congested commercial and residential districts through one-directional underground tunnels , enabling fast, seamless, and signal-free travel across the city.


Network Length, Cost and Phased Rollout

Once completed, the Dubai Loop will stretch 22.2 kilometres and consist of 19 underground stations . The estimated total investment for the full network is USD 681 million , equivalent to approximately Rs 5,650 crore .

The first phase will connect the Dubai International Financial Centre with Dubai Mall , covering 6.4 kilometres and incorporating four stations . This phase is projected to cost USD 163 million (around Rs1,350 crore) and is expected to be completed within one to two years .


Passenger Capacity and Speed Capabilities

In its initial phase, the Dubai Loop is expected to cater to around 13,000 passengers per day . After full network completion, daily capacity is projected to rise to up to 30,000 passengers .

The system will operate electric vehicles inside underground tunnels, offering point-to-point travel without intermediate stops . Designed for efficiency, the vehicles are expected to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h , significantly reducing travel time compared to conventional urban transport modes.


Technology Base and Global Context

The Dubai Loop is built using tunnelling technology developed by The Boring Company , founded by Elon Musk . Similar tunnel-based transport systems are already operational in Las Vegas , providing a tested foundation for Dubai’s project.

By adopting this model, Dubai reinforces its image as a global leader in futuristic, sustainable, and technology-driven urban infrastructure , focused on improving mobility efficiency and quality of life.
