Indian Army Declares 2026 as ‘Year of Networking & Data Centricity’ to Accelerate Digital Transformation
The Indian Army has declared 2026 as the ‘Year of Networking & Data Centricity’ , signalling a decisive shift towards digitally integrated warfare and faster, more informed decision-making. The move forms part of a larger decade-long transformation programme aimed at enhancing the Army’s agility, resilience, and combat effectiveness in an era defined by rapid technological change and complex security challenges.
Vision Articulated by the Army Chief
In his New Year address, Chief of Army Staff Upendra Dwivedi stated that the force is in the midst of a “decade of transformation” built on the pillars of jointness, self-reliance, and innovation. He underlined that the integration of indigenous technologies, adoption of new operational concepts, and continuous structural reforms are strengthening India’s overall military capability.
According to the Army Chief, networking and data-centric operations are providing renewed momentum to this transformation by enabling faster and more precise military responses.
Understanding Networking and Data Centricity
In modern military doctrine, data centricity treats information as a core combat resource , rather than a by-product of platforms such as tanks, aircraft, or ships. Data collected from sensors, drones, satellites, and reconnaissance units is shared instantly across a secure, unified network.
This allows commanders to identify threats quickly and task the most suitable unit or weapon system in real time, sharply reducing decision cycles and improving battlefield outcomes when compared to traditional platform-centric operations.
Operational Advantages and Joint Warfare
A networked, data-centric force enables multiple units and platforms to operate from a shared information pool. This enhances coordination in troop deployment, logistics, surveillance, and firepower application. The Army has emphasised that such integration will significantly strengthen jointness among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, making combined operations more seamless in multi-domain conflict scenarios.
The approach is particularly relevant in modern warfare, where speed, precision, and information superiority often determine operational success.
Link with Modernisation and Recent Operations
The initiative aligns closely with India’s broader defence modernisation and indigenisation efforts. General Dwivedi also referred to Operation Sindoor , stating that firm and decisive actions had effectively countered hostile designs and continue to do so.
The focus on networking builds upon earlier reform steps, including the declaration of 2024 as the ‘Year of Technology Absorption’ , reflecting the Army’s intent to rapidly bridge capability gaps and prepare for future conflicts.
