DRI Busts Illegal Alprazolam Manufacturing Unit in Andhra Pradesh

Alprazolam Seizure Highlights NDPS Enforcement Against Psychotropic Drugs

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence recently uncovered a clandestine unit involved in the illegal production of Alprazolam in Andhra Pradesh . The operation forms part of ongoing enforcement efforts to curb the illegal manufacturing and trafficking of psychotropic substances in the country. While Alprazolam is widely used in medical treatment, it is strictly regulated due to its potential for misuse, addiction and illicit trade.

Alprazolam and Its Classification

Alprazolam is a psychotropic medication belonging to the benzodiazepine group of drugs. It is prescribed to treat anxiety disorders, panic attacks and anxiety associated with depression.

Benzodiazepines act as tranquillising agents by depressing the activity of the central nervous system. These medicines are widely used in psychiatric treatment but require careful medical supervision because prolonged or uncontrolled use may lead to dependency.

Mechanism of Action

The drug works by increasing the activity of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter responsible for reducing neuronal activity in the brain.

By enhancing the inhibitory effect of GABA, Alprazolam slows excessive neural activity associated with anxiety and panic disorders. This produces a calming and sedative effect, helping patients manage symptoms such as nervousness, agitation and panic episodes.

Regulation Under the NDPS Act

In India, psychotropic substances like Alprazolam are regulated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 . The Act strictly controls the manufacture, sale, possession and transport of such substances to prevent misuse and illegal trade.

Enforcement agencies conduct intelligence-based investigations to identify illegal manufacturing units and smuggling networks dealing in narcotics and psychotropic drugs.

Role of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence was established in 1957 and functions under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs within the Ministry of Finance .

The agency investigates smuggling, narcotics trafficking, commercial fraud and customs duty evasion linked to international trade. Its intelligence operations help dismantle illegal drug networks and strengthen enforcement of drug control laws.
