India Conducts In-Flight Trials of ADC-150 for Naval Logistics Support
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully carried out four in-flight release trials of the indigenous Air Droppable Container (ADC-150) . The trials were conducted from the Boeing P-8I Poseidon off the coast of Goa between February 21 and March 1, 2026 . The tests were performed under varied and demanding release conditions, demonstrating the system’s reliability and marking an important milestone in enhancing naval logistics capabilities.
Purpose and Operational Role
The ADC-150 is an indigenously developed container designed to deliver payloads of up to 150 kilograms from aircraft directly to naval vessels operating far from land. The system enables quick delivery of essential supplies such as spare parts, medical kits, tools and emergency stores .
This capability is particularly important for ships deployed in distant waters, where immediate access to logistical support is limited. By enabling aerial supply drops, the ADC-150 can help maintain operational continuity during extended missions or emergency situations.
Trials Conducted from P-8I Aircraft
The in-flight tests were carried out using the Boeing P-8I Poseidon , a long-range maritime surveillance aircraft widely used by the Indian Navy for reconnaissance and anti-submarine operations.
During the trials, the container was released under multiple operational scenarios to evaluate its accuracy, stability and descent performance . The successful demonstration confirmed that the system can safely deliver supplies to ships operating in blue-water regions , far from coastal bases.
DRDO Laboratories Involved
Several DRDO facilities contributed to the development and testing of the ADC-150 system. The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory served as the nodal laboratory coordinating the project. The Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment designed the parachute mechanism that ensures a controlled descent of the container.
Flight certification and airworthiness were handled by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification, while instrumentation support was provided by the Defence Research and Development Laboratory.
Enhancing Naval Logistics
The ADC-150 system was developed within a relatively short timeframe to meet the operational needs of the Indian Navy. With the successful completion of developmental flight trials, the container is expected to be inducted into service soon .
Once operational, it will significantly improve the Navy’s ability to deliver urgent supplies to vessels deployed in remote maritime zones, strengthening mission readiness and operational endurance .
