DAC Clears Rs 3.6 Lakh Crore Defence Procurement

MRFA Rafale Jets, Missiles and AS-HAPS Approved

India has approved a major defence modernisation package, with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) granting Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for proposals valued at approximately Rs 3.6 lakh crore . The approvals cover air combat platforms, missile systems, high-altitude surveillance assets, and upgrades for land and maritime forces.

Rafale Jets Under MRFA Programme

A central component of the package is the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft under the Multi Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) programme. The acquisition aims to strengthen the Indian Air Force (IAF), which currently operates below its sanctioned squadron strength. Indigenous manufacturing is expected to play a significant role, reinforcing domestic aerospace production under the ‘Make in India’ framework.

Advanced Missiles and AS-HAPS Systems

The approvals include next-generation combat missiles to enhance stand-off strike capability. Additionally, the Air-Ship Based High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (AS-HAPS) system will expand long-duration Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR). Operating in the stratosphere, AS-HAPS platforms provide persistent monitoring, secure communications, and electronic intelligence functions.

Army Capability Enhancement

For the Indian Army , AoN has been granted for Vibhav anti-tank mines and upgrades to Armoured Recovery Vehicles (ARVs), T-72 tanks, and BMP-II Infantry Combat Vehicles. These measures improve battlefield survivability and extend platform operational life.

Naval and Coastal Security Measures

The Indian Navy will induct additional P-8I aircraft and develop indigenous marine power systems. The Indian Coast Guard will enhance maritime surveillance through Electro-Optical/Infra-Red systems.
