An innovation in the field of analytical chemistry has taken the ion chromatography, which was a preserve of advanced laboratories, to the arena. Scientists at the University of Tasmania have come up with a nitrate and nitrite detecting ion chromatograph, called Aquamonitrix, which is a portable device that could help detect nitrate and nitrite in the soil pore waters in real-time. Such innovation makes environmental monitoring cheaper, accessible and practical and is also a useful educational instrument.
