The election of C. P. Radhakrishnan as the new Vice President of India is carry on to the long held office that is the second highest constitutional office in the Constitution, Article 63. In addition to this post of symbol, the Vice President is the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and takes over the responsibilities of the President when the President is vacated or incapacitated. The office has developed over the years since its establishment in 1952 in accordance with the political, social, and constitutional changes in India.
