Actor Vijay Takes Oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on 10 May 2026

Overview

On 10 May 2026, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay became the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He took oath at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. His party, TVK, won 108 seats and broke the nearly six-decade-old two-party rule of DMK and AIADMK. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath.

Puducherry Makes e-KYC Must for Ration Buyers Under New Digital Rupee Scheme

Overview

From 26 February 2026, Puducherry made e-KYC registration compulsory for all Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) beneficiaries. They now get food subsidy through Central Bank Digital Currency (e₹) instead of cash. The digital wallet works for three months and can only buy rice and other grains at Fair Price Shops.

Amul MD Jayen Mehta Takes Charge as First SPCDF Chairman

Richard Lewer Wins Archibald Prize 2026 for Portrait of Pitjantjatjara Elder Iluwanti Ken

Overview

The Archibald Prize 2026 was awarded on 8 May 2026 to Richard Lewer, a Melbourne-based artist. He won for his portrait of Iluwanti Ken, a Pitjantjatjara Elder, senior artist, and traditional healer (ngangkari). The prize comes with $100,000 cash. The winning work was chosen from 1,034 entries. The exhibition of finalist works opened on 9 May 2026 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and runs until 16 August 2026.
