Chile Supports India’s Bid for Permanent UNSC Membership, Calls for UN Reform

India’s UNSC Aspirations Gain Momentum as Chile Backs Permanent Seat

Chile has formally backed India’s aspiration for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) , describing New Delhi as a country capable of playing a stabilising and constructive role in global affairs. The endorsement adds momentum to India’s long-standing demand for reform of the UN system to better reflect present-day geopolitical realities rather than post–Second World War power structures.

Chile’s Call for Meaningful UNSC Reform

Speaking to the media, Juan Angulo , Chile’s Ambassador to India, stressed that comprehensive reform of the multilateral system is no longer optional. He noted that the United Nations Security Council must evolve to remain effective, transparent, and credible.

According to Chile, a Security Council that continues to reflect the global balance of power from 1945 risks losing legitimacy. Reform, the envoy said, is essential to preserve trust in a rules-based international order and ensure that the UNSC can respond effectively to contemporary global challenges.

India’s Relevance in Today’s Global Landscape

The Chilean ambassador underlined that India’s position in the world today is vastly different from what it was eight decades ago. With its growing economic strength, expanding diplomatic footprint, and increasing political influence, India has emerged as a key global actor.

Chile views India as a credible and stabilising force , capable of contributing constructively to peace, security, and multilateral decision-making. Supporting India’s permanent membership, the envoy said, would align the UNSC with current global realities rather than historical legacies.

India’s Long-Standing Case for Permanent Membership

India has consistently argued that it deserves a permanent seat in a reformed and expanded UNSC . New Delhi points to several factors strengthening its claim:

  • One of the world’s largest populations

  • A rapidly growing major economy

  • A strong record of contributions to UN peacekeeping operations

  • A sustained commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation

India has also maintained that the credibility and effectiveness of the UNSC depend on fair representation of developing and emerging powers , particularly from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Growing International Support for India

Chile’s endorsement adds to a widening circle of international backing for India’s bid. Major global powers such as the United States, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom have expressed support for India’s permanent membership. Key partners including Japan, Germany, Brazil, and Australia have also backed India’s candidature.

These endorsements reinforce India’s position that meaningful UNSC reform is critical for addressing modern challenges such as geopolitical conflicts, climate change, terrorism, and global economic instability.

Why This Matters

Support from countries like Chile reflects a broader consensus that the existing structure of the UNSC no longer mirrors global realities. As calls for reform grow louder, India’s case gains strength as part of a wider push to make
