Chhattisgarh Approves Draft Freedom of Religion Bill 2026 to Curb Forced Conversions

Chhattisgarh Cabinet Clears Anti-Conversion Bill 2026 for Assembly Introduction

The government of Chhattisgarh has approved the draft of the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026 during a state Cabinet meeting. The proposed legislation seeks to prevent religious conversions carried out through coercion, fraud, inducement, misrepresentation, or undue influence. Following Cabinet approval, the Bill is expected to be introduced in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly , which is currently in session.

Objective of the Proposed Law

The primary aim of the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026 is to strengthen legal provisions against unlawful religious conversions. According to state authorities, the law intends to ensure that any change of religion occurs voluntarily and is based on genuine personal choice.

The proposed legislation is expected to expand existing provisions and introduce stricter mechanisms to address violations involving forced or deceptive conversions.

Regulation of Faith-Healing Gatherings

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma indicated that the Bill will also address activities known as “changai sabhas,” or faith-healing meetings. State officials have claimed that some such gatherings may allegedly be used to influence individuals to convert through inducements or psychological pressure.

The government has stated that the proposed law would regulate such activities to prevent misuse of religious practices for conversion purposes.

Existing Legal Framework

The state already has a legal framework governing religious conversions under the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act, 1968 . However, authorities believe that the older legislation requires revision to address contemporary challenges and strengthen enforcement.

The new Bill is intended either to replace or substantially update the earlier law by introducing stricter safeguards and clearer provisions regarding unlawful conversions.

Background and Public Debate

The issue of religious conversion has periodically generated social and political debate in Chhattisgarh . Allegations of forced conversions have been reported in certain districts, sometimes leading to tensions between community groups and religious organisations.

In recent years, related incidents have sparked national discussion on balancing religious freedom , social harmony and regulation of conversion practices.
