CEREBO: Pocket Brain Injury Detector

CEREBO is a brand new hand-held gadget that is used to identify traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in a safe way and fast. Developed by research institutes in India, it provides a low-cost, non-invasive, and portable alternative to CT and MRI scanning, and seeks to enhance early diagnosis and treatment, especially in resource-restricted and emergency triage .

Cultivation and Cooperation.

It is a joint development of ICMR , Medical Device & Diagnostics Mission Secretariat (MDMS) , AIIMS Bhopal, NIMHANS Bengaluru and Bioscan Research . It applies machine learning with near-infrared spectroscopy to detect intracranial bleeding and swelling. The accuracy and safety of it are confirmed through clinical trials and regulatory approvals.

Key Features

  • Gives an answer in less than one minute based on colour-coded scans without radiation.
  • Free of side effects on infants, expectant, and adult women.
  • Workable by paramedics and the least trained staff.
  • Excellent with ambulances, rural health centres, trauma units, and disaster areas.

Importance in TBI Care

Traumatic brain injuries are usually a result of road accidents (approximately 60% in India) and cause high morbidity and mortality. Conventional instruments such as the Glasgow Coma Scale lack objectivity and the imaging procedures are very expensive and resource intensive. CEREBO allows quick triage and minimizes the time lost in treatment, as well as avoids life-threatening complications.

Clinical Benefits and Clinical validation.

The high diagnostic accuracy was demonstrated on trials in major trauma and neurosurgical Centres. Smooth integration into emergency care was reported in post-market surveillance. Health technology appraisals suggest its use in order to:

  • Optimise triage decisions.
  • Lower imaging costs.
  • Make sure to optimise the use of CT scans in severe cases.

Solving Diagnostic Problems.

Mild TBIs are not usually diagnosed because they have subtle symptoms. The first and the most important step is early diagnosis between the 24-48 hours to prevent chronic conditions such as impaired thinking, emotional disorders, or physical disability. CEREBO offers a consistent answer to these lapses.

Future Outlook

CEREBO is portable and easy to use and it is thus poised to be adopted globally in emergency, rural and military healthcare systems. Further studies can enhance its potential, so it can be a game-changing innovation in the management of brain injury.
