CBSE Board Exams 2026: Improvement and Supplementary Exam Rules Explained

CBSE Clarifies Improvement Attempts for Class 10 and Class 12 Students

As the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) prepares to conduct board examinations from February 17, 2026, the Board has clarified key aspects related to improvement and supplementary examinations. CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bharadwaj addressed frequently raised queries from students and parents, offering guidance on attempts available after passing Class 10 and Class 12.

Improvement Options for Class 12 Students

Students who have passed Class 12 and wish to enhance their overall performance can opt for improvement examinations through two routes:

  1. Supplementary Examination (July 2026):
Candidates may appear for improvement in only one subject . This provides an opportunity to raise marks without waiting for the next academic cycle.

  2. Main Board Examination (February 2027):
Students seeking improvement in multiple subjects must reappear in the next main examination.

CBSE has confirmed that the two-examination policy applies exclusively to Class 10 and does not extend to Class 12.

Class 10 Improvement Examination Framework

For Class 10, the second board examination effectively serves as the improvement exam. The application process follows a two-window system:

  • Post-Main Exam Window: Opens immediately after the exams for about 10 days.

  • Post-Result Window: Allows students to apply based on actual performance.

Only candidates who complete fee payment will be eligible to appear.

Percentage Calculation Policy

CBSE reiterated that it does not calculate percentages . Marks are reflected in the marksheet, while percentage computation depends on higher education institutions or recruiting bodies.

Exam-Focused Points

  • Class 12 Supplementary Exam → Improvement allowed in one subject only

  • Multiple Subject Improvement → Allowed only via next main exam

  • Two-Board Exam Policy → Applicable to Class 10 only

  • CBSE Marksheet → Displays marks, not percentage
