BioNEST Incubation Centre at CFTRI: Boost to Food and Biotech Startups

BioNEST Centre Enriches the Indian ecosystem of innovation.

The BIRAC-BioNEST Incubation Centre in Central Food Technological Research Institute was inaugurated by Union Minister Jitendra Singh. The project will focus on innovating the markets of food processing and biotechnology through the promotion of entrepreneurial innovation in science and technology.

Modern Incubation Infrastructure

BioNEST facility is modelled as a state of the art incubation centre with facilities such as modern laboratories, and workspaces, and communal research facilities. It assists startups in product development, testing, scaling, and regulatory compliance. It is concerned with the transformation of scientific concepts into commercial opportunities, particularly in food biotechnology and food processing.

Startup Development and Successes.

The centre has been assisting 26 startups (both active and graduated) as of March 2026. There are numerous examples of people who have commercialised their innovations. These startups have collectively registered approximately 12 patents and have been involved in several research publications, which indicates a high level of innovation and industry applicability.

Concentrate on New Technology.

The centre has startups in the more advanced fields of nutraceuticals, precision fermentation, probiotics, postbiotics, CRISPR based technologies and plant-based products. These industries are the future of sustainable and health-conscious food systems, which is in line with the technological and consumer trends in the world.

Exam-Focused Points

  • BioNEST = Biotech incubation programme in BIRAC.
  • CFTRI = institute of food research, CSIR.
  • 26 startups funded, approximately 12 patents.
  • Areas of interest: CRISPR, nutraceuticals, fermentation.
  • Aim: Lab-to-market commercialisation

Collaboration and Future in the Industry.

Four MoUs were also signed and two new products launched during the inauguration, which point to good relationships in the industry. CFTRI has transferred more than 450 technologies that are developed, and it remains a major intermediary between research and industry.
