BIRAC BioNEST Incubation Center at CFTRI
The BIRAC BioNEST Incubation Center was launched by Union Minister Jitendra Singh. This initiative is crucial for the growth of India's food innovation environment through the collaboration of scientific research and practical implementation of startup innovations.
Modern Infrastructure with Startup Incubation
The incubation center has been created as a modern infrastructure with the latest facilities for research. Besides dedicated office space, there is also a fully equipped laboratory where startups can develop their innovations. The main focus of this center lies in providing support to early and late stage startups in biotechnology and food technology industries.
Role of BIRAC in Encouraging Innovation
The project is sponsored by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council. This body works to promote innovation-based entrepreneurship in the biotech industry through incubations and investments in startups.
Performance of Startups at Incubation Center
As of March 2026, it has become possible to assess the performance of startups from this center. By that time, 26 startups were supported under physical, hybrid, and graduated incubation models. They filed about 12 patents and published numerous research papers.
Emerging Technologies of the Future
The startups at the incubation center develop promising technologies in nutraceuticals, precision fermentation, probiotics and postbiotics, CRISPR-based gene-editing, and plant-based products. These sectors will define the future development of sustainable and healthy food systems.
