Bharat Steel 2026: Global Platform on Steel’s Future
India will host Bharat Steel 2026 , a two-day international conference-cum-exhibition, on April 16–17 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Organised by the Ministry of Steel , the summit is designed to bring together policymakers, global steelmakers, technology providers and investors to deliberate on the future of steelmaking amid sustainability imperatives, supply-chain realignments and rapid technological change.
Strategic Importance of Steel for India
Steel occupies a central place in India’s development strategy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly described steel as a backbone industry supporting infrastructure, manufacturing, defence and energy. As the world’s second-largest steel producer, India views the sector as vital to achieving long-term economic expansion, industrial self-reliance and the broader goal of a $5 trillion economy.
Ambitious Capacity Targets and Policy Direction
The government has set a steel production capacity target of 300 million tonnes by 2030, with a longer-term vision of 500 million tonnes by 2047. Rapid growth in domestic demand from housing, transport, railways and renewable energy is fuelling expansion. At the same time, policymakers are emphasising secure raw material supply, logistics efficiency, beneficiation of low-grade ores and reduced dependence on imported coking coal to ensure resilience and competitiveness.
Innovation, PLI Scheme and Green Steel Agenda
Innovation-led transformation will be a core theme at Bharat Steel 2026. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for specialty steel is steering the industry towards high-value and high-grade products used in defence, aerospace, automotive and advanced manufacturing. Another major focus will be green steel, aligned with the Steel Ministry’s Green Steel Roadmap, which promotes the use of green hydrogen, carbon capture technologies, higher scrap utilisation and low-emission steelmaking processes.
Global Participation and Technology Focus
Over 700 delegates from India and abroad are expected to participate, including global steel producers, equipment suppliers, startups, public sector enterprises and financial institutions. Sessions will cover digitalisation, automation, artificial intelligence-driven efficiency, circular economy practices and climate-aligned financing. The summit aims to position India not just as a large steel producer, but as a leader in sustainable and technology-driven steel manufacturing.
