Assam to Plant 1 Crore Saplings on World Environment Day: Women SHGs Lead the Way

Overview

Assam will plant one crore saplings on World Environment Day, 5 June 2026. About 35 lakh women from Self-Help Groups will lead the drive across rural and urban areas. The initiative aims to boost afforestation, restore degraded forests, and strengthen community-based environmental action in the state.

A Green Revolution in Assam

On 5 June 2026, Assam will witness one of its largest community-led plantation drives. The state government has planned to plant  one crore saplings  across the state. This will happen on  World Environment Day . About  35 lakh women  from  Self-Help Groups (SHGs)  will take part in the drive. The initiative covers both rural and urban areas. It aims to increase forest cover, restore degraded land, and fight climate change. The drive also empowers women by involving them directly in environmental action.

What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day is observed every year on  5 June . The United Nations established this day in  1972 . It is the biggest global platform for environmental awareness. On this day, countries organise plantation drives, clean-up campaigns, and conservation programmes. The goal is to inspire positive action for the planet. Assam has chosen this day to launch its massive plantation drive.

The Scale of the Drive: One Crore Saplings

One crore means  10 million  saplings. Planting so many trees in a single day is a huge task. The government has selected native species of trees. These include fruit trees, timber trees, and shade-giving trees. The saplings will be planted on:

  • Roadside areas

  • Government land

  • School and college campuses

  • Degraded forest land

  • Community spaces in villages and towns

The drive is not just about planting. It also includes caring for the saplings. Local communities and SHG members will water and protect the young trees.

Role of Self-Help Groups: 35 Lakh Women Power

Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are small community-based collectives. In Assam, women’s SHGs are very active. They work in savings, credit, and livelihood activities. The government has involved them in this plantation drive. About  35 lakh women  from SHGs will participate. Each woman will plant and adopt at least one tree. This gives the drive a strong grassroots base. It also provides income opportunities. The women will be paid for their work under rural employment schemes.

Why Women? The SHG Advantage

Women are natural caretakers of the environment. They are more likely to nurture trees and ensure their survival. In Assam, SHG women have already been successful in:

  • Running community nurseries

  • Managing waste and composting

  • Promoting organic farming

By involving them in afforestation, the government strengthens both ecology and women’s livelihoods.

Afforestation and Forest Restoration

Afforestation means planting trees on land that was not forested before. Assam also plans to restore degraded forest areas. This is called  forest reclamation . Many forest patches in Assam have been damaged by floods, encroachment, or shifting cultivation. Planting native trees will help bring back the ecological balance. Trees improve soil quality, prevent erosion, and support wildlife.

Government Review and Preparation

On  3 June 2026 , Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister  Atul Bora  chaired a review meeting. The meeting was held in  Guwahati . Officials from the Panchayat and Rural Development Department and the Environment and Forest Department attended. They discussed:

  • Availability of saplings

  • Distribution of planting sites

  • Coordination with SHGs

  • Watering and maintenance plans

Minister Bora instructed all district authorities to make full preparations. He said that this drive will be a model for community-driven environmental action.

Benefits of the Plantation Drive

The one-crore sapling drive will bring many benefits:

  • Increased green cover:  More trees will absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

  • Flood control:  Tree roots hold soil and reduce runoff. This can help control Assam’s frequent floods.

  • Wildlife habitat:  Native trees provide food and shelter for birds and animals.

  • Climate resilience:  Trees cool the surroundings and improve rainfall patterns.

  • Employment:  SHG women will earn wages through the drive.

  • Awareness:  The drive will educate people about the importance of trees.

World Environment Day 2026 Theme

The United Nations announces a theme for World Environment Day every year. For 2026, the theme is  “Restore Our Earth” . Assam’s plantation drive fits perfectly with this theme. By planting one crore trees, the state is actively restoring its natural environment.

How the Drive Will Be Implemented

The government has prepared a detailed plan:

  1. Sapling collection:  Saplings will be sourced from government nurseries, forest department nurseries, and SHG-run nurseries.

  2. Site identification:  Village councils and urban local bodies have marked land for planting.

  3. Distribution:  Each SHG member will receive 2-3 saplings to plant.

  4. Planting:  On 5 June, at a fixed time, all participants will plant the saplings.

  5. Monitoring:  Gram Panchayats and municipal wards will track survival of trees.

  6. Incentives:  SHG members will get payment under MGNREGA or other schemes.

A Historic Community Effort

This is not a government-only programme. It is a people’s movement. Students, teachers, farmers, and government employees will also join. Religious institutions and community halls will distribute saplings to devotees. The drive aims to create a sense of ownership among citizens. When people plant trees themselves, they protect them better.
