Assam’s Aromatic Joha Rice Enters European Markets with First Major Export
The state of Assam has achieved a significant milestone in promoting its traditional agricultural products globally with the export of Joha Rice to United Kingdom and Italy . A shipment of 25 metric tonnes of the GI-tagged aromatic rice was dispatched from Guwahati , marking the first large-scale export of the traditional variety to European markets. The development reflects the rising global demand for India’s region-specific and specialty agricultural produce.
First Major Shipment to Europe
The export initiative was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry , in partnership with the Assam state agriculture department.
According to officials, the rice will be transported by road from Guwahati to Kolkata , from where it will be shipped to European destinations. The export highlights Assam’s ability to meet international quality and packaging standards.
Indigenous Aromatic Rice Variety
Joha Rice is a traditional rice variety cultivated mainly in Assam . It is valued for its distinct fragrance, soft texture and fine grain quality , which make it popular in traditional Assamese cuisine and premium food markets.
The rice received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2017 , confirming its regional origin and protecting its authenticity. GI recognition has helped increase the product’s reputation and market value both domestically and internationally.
Earlier International Shipments
Before reaching European markets, Joha rice had already been exported to several countries in Asia and West Asia. Earlier consignments included one metric tonne shipped to Vietnam and two metric tonnes each to Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia .
These early exports helped introduce the aromatic rice to global consumers and paved the way for larger shipments to international markets.
Economic Benefits for Farmers
The export of Joha Rice to Europe is expected to improve global recognition of Assam’s agricultural products and create better income opportunities for farmers.
By targeting premium international markets, the state aims to position Joha rice as a high-value specialty grain . Expanding exports of GI-tagged agricultural products could also encourage investments in production, quality control and branding, strengthening rural livelihoods in the region.
