Arunachal Dao Awarded Geographical Indication Tag
The traditional Arunachal Pradesh dao , a hand-crafted blade central to the cultural and functional life of the state’s tribal communities, has officially been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag . The recognition marks a major milestone for indigenous craftsmanship and strengthens efforts to safeguard local artisanal traditions.
Cultural Heritage and Craft Identity Strengthened
The GI tag establishes the Arunachal dao as a product uniquely tied to its geographic and cultural roots. Forged using time-honoured blacksmithing methods, the dao is valued for its sturdy design, sharpness, and symbolic association with tribal identity. Officials note that the certification will help preserve the specialised forging techniques passed down through generations, while protecting artisans from imitation products entering the market.
Economic Opportunities for Traditional Artisans
With the GI status, artisan communities across districts such as Lohit, Changlang and Tirap are expected to benefit from improved branding and enhanced market recognition. The state government plans to launch training programmes and quality-standardisation initiatives to ensure artisans gain higher income and better access to national and global craft markets. Increased visibility is also projected to boost tourism linked to tribal culture and handicraft clusters.
Arunachal’s Expanding GI Portfolio
The dao joins a growing list of unique products from Arunachal Pradesh that have received GI recognition. These include Wakro Orange , Idu Mishmi shawls , Khamti rice , Yak churpi , and Wancho woodcraft , reflecting the state’s diverse heritage and traditional skills.
