Indian Railways Modernisation Drive: Amrit Bharat Station Scheme Explained
The Ministry of Railways is advancing the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to upgrade railway infrastructure nationwide. Covering 1338 stations, the initiative focuses on improving passenger amenities, connectivity, and transforming stations into modern urban hubs.
Coverage and Delhi Stations Identified
Under the scheme, 13 stations in Delhi have been selected for redevelopment, including Adarsh Nagar Delhi, Anand Vihar, Bijwasan, Delhi Junction, Delhi Cantt, Delhi Sarai Rohilla, Delhi Shahdara, Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station, Narela, New Delhi, Sabzi Mandi, Safdarjung and Tilak Bridge. These stations are being upgraded to handle rising passenger traffic and improve overall travel experience.
Key Infrastructure Developments
Substantial work has progressed across multiple stations. At Safdarjung, key structures such as station buildings, telecom systems and departure areas are nearing completion. Bijwasan has completed core structural components including sewage treatment systems. At Delhi Cantt, phased construction of station buildings, elevated roads and residential facilities is underway. Other stations like Narela, Sabzi Mandi and Tilak Bridge are witnessing upgrades in platforms, shelters and parking infrastructure.
Master Planning and Modernisation Features
The scheme adopts a station-specific master planning approach. It includes better station access, integration with surrounding urban areas, modern waiting halls, upgraded sanitation facilities, lifts, escalators and wider foot overbridges. Additional features include kiosks under the ‘One Station One Product’ initiative, improved passenger information systems, executive lounges and multimodal connectivity. Sustainable infrastructure elements such as eco-friendly construction and advanced track systems are also being incorporated.
Challenges and Implementation Approach
Redevelopment involves operational and logistical complexities, including maintaining train services during construction, relocating utilities and obtaining multiple clearances related to safety, environment and heritage. Due to these challenges, the scheme follows a phased and priority-based execution strategy rather than a fixed completion timeline.
