Amit Shah Launches Vibrant Village Programme-II in Assam

Border Development Push Under Vibrant Village Programme

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the second phase of the Vibrant Village Programme in Assam , signalling a renewed emphasis on infrastructure and livelihood development in border regions. The programme launch took place at Natanpur village in the Barak Valley, highlighting the Centre’s policy of prioritising frontier settlements as engines of growth rather than peripheral areas.

Expanding Border Infrastructure

Vibrant Village Programme-II seeks to transform border villages through comprehensive infrastructure upgrades. Nationwide, the initiative covers 334 blocks and 1,954 villages across 17 states, supported by a financial allocation of ₹6,900 crore.

In Assam, the scheme encompasses nine districts, 26 blocks, and 140 villages located along the Bangladesh border. Development efforts will focus on road networks, telecommunications, electricity access, sanitation facilities, and safe drinking water systems. The objective is to deliver essential amenities on par with national standards.

Education and Livelihood Priorities

Beyond physical infrastructure, the programme integrates social and economic dimensions. Authorities plan to strengthen educational facilities, expand digital connectivity, and promote skill development initiatives within border communities.

Employment generation remains a central pillar. By creating local economic opportunities, the government aims to reduce distress migration and enhance financial stability in remote settlements.

Strategic and Developmental Importance

Officials emphasised that the programme serves both developmental and strategic objectives. Strengthened border villages contribute to national security, demographic stability, and regional resilience.

The initiative aligns with the broader policy shift of redefining border settlements as “first villages” — areas receiving focused developmental attention due to their geographic and strategic significance.

Regional Implementation

Natanpur’s selection underscores the importance of Barak Valley in Assam’s border development framework. Authorities aim to accelerate integrated infrastructure and welfare improvements across all identified districts.
