63rd Walong Day: Honouring the Heroes of the 1962 Battle of Walong
The 63rd Walong Day was commemorated on 15–16 November 2025 in Arunachal Pradesh, paying homage to the extraordinary bravery displayed by Indian soldiers during the 1962 Battle of Walong. The observance brought together senior military officers, war veterans, local communities and state leaders in a solemn celebration of courage, sacrifice and patriotic legacy.
Tributes at Walong War Memorial
The final day began with wreath-laying ceremonies at the Walong War Memorial, attended by the Eastern Army Commander, the GOC Spear Corps, and the Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. Statues honouring the soldiers who fought in the high-altitude frontier battle were unveiled, symbolising India’s lasting gratitude. The event highlighted the valour of troops who held their ground for 27 days against overwhelming odds.
Cultural Showcasing on Walong Day Eve
The celebrations on 15 November included a dramatic Light and Sound Show, drone formations, traditional dances and sand art. These performances narrated the story of the Battle of Walong—one of the most heroic stands of the 1962 war—showcasing the hardships and indomitable spirit of Indian forces in extreme Himalayan terrain.
Strengthening Heritage and Border Tourism
The state leadership honoured the 388 soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice and reiterated the deep civil–military bond of the region. Plans were announced to develop Walong as a heritage and tourism hub, including a War Memorial Museum, enhanced digital and road connectivity, and cultural initiatives such as the Sunrise Festival.
