5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Bangladesh, Tremors Felt in Kolkata
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending mild tremors across parts of eastern India, including Kolkata and several districts of West Bengal. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) , the earthquake occurred at 10:08 am (IST) with its epicentre located 14 km west-southwest of Narsingdi . The quake was shallow, increasing the intensity of vibrations felt at the surface.
Tremors Felt Across Kolkata and North Bengal
Residents in Kolkata reported feeling short but noticeable tremors, with many observing ceiling fans and wall hangings sway. People briefly stepped out of homes and offices as a precaution. Similar tremors were also felt in Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and Cooch Behar , where residents shared visuals on social media showing swaying fixtures and people gathered outside buildings.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries, casualties, or structural damages have been reported so far. Monitoring agencies continue to track aftershock possibilities.
Regional Seismic Activity and Recent Pakistan Quake
The event follows a 3.9-magnitude earthquake in Pakistan recorded by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) a day earlier. That quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km , a factor that typically makes tremors more intense due to shorter travel distance of seismic waves.
South Asia—especially Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan —lies in one of the world’s most active seismic zones, where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide. As a result, the region frequently experiences moderate to strong tremors felt across borders.
