Historical Events

  • 1953 - Chandernagore merged with West Bengal.
  • Formerly a French colony, Chandernagore (now part of West Bengal) formally became part of West Bengal on 29 August 1953 after the referendum and previous de facto transfer in 1950.
  • 1958 - Dhyan Chand, reflections of a wizard in hockey.
  • On 29 August, the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand (born 1905), the legendary Indian hockey player who won three gold medals in the Olympics (1928, 1932, 1936), the National Sports Day in India is observed.

Births

  • 1905 - Major Dhyan Chand

  • Dhyan Chand is the greatest hockey player of all time, who was born in Allahabad (formerly known as Prayagraj) and is commonly referred to as the Wizard of Hockey. He was an international sporting legend because of his tremendous goal-scoring ability.

  • 1915 - Dr. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar (notable scientist, less modern history), an influential Indian chemical engineer and scientist, although more modern science history.

Other Notes

The event is celebrated as a National Sports Day in India, and it is a day where the sporting accomplishments of India are celebrated and a sports culture and fitness are encouraged in India.
