UNCTAD: The UN Body Working for Fairer Trade and Development

Overview

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is a permanent intergovernmental body established in 1964. It supports developing countries to access the benefits of a globalized economy fairly and effectively. According to a recent UNCTAD report, developing countries could save nearly $500 billion annually if they borrowed at the same interest rates as developed economies.

New Forester Moth Species Mimeusemia kali Discovered in Karnataka Kali Tiger Reserve

Overview

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India have discovered a new forester moth species from Karnataka's Kali Tiger Reserve. Named Mimeusemia kali, it is the first addition to the genus Mimeusemia in nearly 30 years. The discovery was published in the international journal Zootaxa. The Western Ghats region continues to reveal new biodiversity.

India at G7 Summit 2026: Championing the Global South and Strategic Partnerships

Overview

India participated in the 52nd G7 Summit Outreach Session in Évian, France, under the theme “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity.” The Prime Minister emphasised addressing the global trust deficit, amplifying the Global South's voice, and undertook key bilateral meetings with Canada, the UK, and the UAE to strengthen strategic partnerships.

India and Thailand Hold 10th Defence Dialogue: Focus on Maritime Security and Defence Manufacturing

Overview

The 10th Thailand-India Defence Dialogue was held in Bangkok on 16 June 2026. The two sides reviewed bilateral defence cooperation, military-to-military engagements, and regional security issues. They also discussed defence manufacturing, research, innovation, and capability development. India and Thailand elevated their ties to a Strategic Partnership in 2025.

India-UK Free Trade Agreement to Take Effect from 15 July 2026

Overview

The India-UK Free Trade Agreement will come into force on 15 July 2026. Signed on 24 July 2025, the pact will slash tariffs on key goods: Indian whisky from 150% to 40% and automotive tariffs from 100% to 10%. Bilateral trade is expected to rise by £25.5 billion annually.
