Assam Takes the Lead on Pay Commission Reform

In a proactive administrative move, Assam has become the first state in India to constitute its 8th State Pay Commission, well ahead of the scheduled expiry of the 7th Pay Commission on January 1, 2026. The decision has drawn widespread attention from state government employees and pensioners, as it provides early direction on the next cycle of salary, allowance and pension revision.

ESZ Notification and Conservation Intent

In a significant step for wetland protection in northern India, the Parvati–Arga Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh has been notified as an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ). The decision was announced by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, with Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh emphasising the need to safeguard fragile ecosystems while enabling sustainable development. The ESZ designation introduces regulatory oversight on activities surrounding the sanctuary, reducing ecological stress from unplanned construction, pollution, and land-use change.

Historic Feat in Antarctica

India’s adventure sports landscape witnessed a landmark moment as 18-year-old Kaamya Karthikeyan successfully skied to the South Pole, becoming the youngest Indian and the second-youngest woman globally to achieve the feat. She reached the pole on December 27, 2025, after traversing nearly 115 kilometres across Antarctica under some of the harshest conditions on Earth.

Young Climber Shines on National Stage

India’s sport climbing ecosystem received a major boost as 14-year-old Amieyra Khoslla won the gold medal in the Youth Girls (Under-17) category at the 29th National Sport Climbing Championship 2025. The championship was held in Bengaluru from December 26 to 29, bringing together the country’s best young climbers across age groups and disciplines.

Goa Expands Administrative Map

Goa is set to witness a significant administrative reorganisation with the creation of its third district, Kushavati. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, marking the first addition to Goa’s district structure since its formation as a state. At present, Goa has only North Goa and South Goa districts.

The new district derives its name from the ancient Kushavati river, reflecting the state’s emphasis on linking administrative reforms with historical and cultural identity.
