OVERVIEW
Every year on 15 May, the world celebrates the International Day of Families. This day reminds us how important families are for society. In 2026, the theme is “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing.” The United Nations chose this theme to highlight how unequal access to money, healthcare, and education hurts families and children. The day encourages governments to make better policies that support families. It was first proclaimed by the UN in 1993. The day also connects to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
