Uttarakhand Wins ‘Best State for Promotion of Aviation and Ecosystem’ at WINGS INDIA 2026

Uttarakhand Bags National Aviation Award at WINGS INDIA 2026

Uttarakhand has received the national award for ‘Best State for Promotion of Aviation and Ecosystem’ at WINGS INDIA 2026 , marking a significant endorsement of the state’s aviation-led development strategy. The recognition reflects how aviation infrastructure has been leveraged to improve connectivity, tourism, disaster response, and public services across the state’s difficult Himalayan terrain.

National Recognition at WINGS INDIA 2026

The award was presented during WINGS INDIA 2026 , India’s flagship civil aviation event held from January 29 to 31 at Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad. Uttarakhand’s Additional Secretary Ashish Chauhan received the honour from the Union Civil Aviation Minister in the presence of Civil Aviation Secretary Sachin Kurve and senior officials from the aviation sector.

The award places Uttarakhand among leading states that have used aviation as a tool for inclusive regional development.

Aviation Support for Char Dham Yatra

A major factor behind the award was Uttarakhand’s effective use of aviation services to manage the annual Char Dham Yatra . The state has expanded and streamlined helicopter operations to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, improving accessibility in high-altitude and weather-sensitive regions.

Key measures included:

  • Development and upgradation of heliports and helipads

  • Enhanced passenger safety and operational protocols

  • Integration of aviation assets with disaster management systems

Helicopter services have been particularly helpful for senior citizens, differently-abled pilgrims, and devotees with limited travel time.

Strengthening Connectivity to Remote and Border Areas

The award citation also highlighted Uttarakhand’s efforts to connect remote, hilly, and border areas through aviation. Expansion of airstrips under the UDAN scheme, promotion of heli-tourism, and deployment of aircraft and helicopters for emergency medical services have strengthened the state’s aviation ecosystem.

These initiatives have improved access to healthcare, disaster relief, and administration in areas where road connectivity remains limited.
