Shashi Shekhar Vempati has been selected for the Padma Shri , one of India’s highest civilian honours, in recognition of a career that uniquely connects technology, public broadcasting, education governance, and emerging digital policy . An alumnus of IIT Bombay , Vempati has played a significant role in shaping India’s public communication ecosystem and knowledge institutions through leadership, reform, and innovation.


IIT Bombay Roots and Systems Thinking

Vempati’s academic training at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay provided a strong engineering and analytical foundation. His education helped him develop a systems-oriented approach to governance, enabling him to apply technological thinking to complex public institutions. This background has consistently influenced his work in media reform, science communication, and technology-driven public service delivery.


Transformational Leadership at Prasar Bharati

Vempati gained national prominence during his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati , India’s autonomous public service broadcaster. Under his leadership, Doordarshan and All India Radio underwent important structural and technological upgrades aimed at modernising operations while retaining their public service character.

He also oversaw Rajya Sabha TV , strengthening parliamentary broadcasting and improving citizen access to legislative debates and public affairs programming. His tenure is often associated with efforts to professionalise public broadcasting, enhance editorial standards, and expand digital reach.


Contributions to Education and Science Communication

Beyond broadcasting, Vempati has been deeply involved in education governance and science communication . He currently chairs the Committee for Science and Technology Communication under the Department of Science and Technology and leads the Educational Media Experts Committee of the University Grants Commission (UGC) .

He also serves on governing bodies of institutions such as the Indian Institute of Mass Communication and the Broadcast Audience Research Council , contributing to media literacy, academic outreach, and evidence-based policy formulation in higher education and mass communication.
