Strategic MoU Between BEL and RRP Group
The latest order follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 24 March 2026 between BEL and RRP Group. The MoU formally brought together BEL’s decades of experience in developing advanced electronics and mission-critical systems for defence and strategic applications, RRP Electronics Ltd’s semiconductor manufacturing expertise, and RRP Defense Ltd’s capabilities in electro-optical (EO) systems and UAV platforms.
Under this partnership, the two entities will jointly identify, design, and develop a range of technologies for defence and strategic applications, including:
-
High-precision EO systems such as surveillance systems and weapon sights
-
Semiconductor devices for defence-grade applications
-
Next-generation unmanned solutions (drones and UAVs)
-
Other advanced defence technologies aligned with national security priorities
The MoU is also expected to unlock export opportunities in line with the Ministry of Defence’s export promotion policies, allowing India to become a global supplier of advanced defence systems.
Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India Context
This collaboration aligns directly with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) policy framework, announced in 2020 to reduce import dependence in manufacturing and strategic sectors, and the Make in India initiative launched in 2014 to boost domestic production. By developing critical electro-optical components like germanium lenses within the country, India reduces its reliance on foreign suppliers for sensitive military technology.
The government has been pushing for indigenisation across the defence supply chain, from raw materials to finished products. BEL, as a Navratna PSU, has been at the forefront of this effort, partnering with private Indian companies to build a robust domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem. The order to RRP Defense is a tangible example of this policy in action.
RRP Defense’s Expanding Role in Defence Technology
Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Navi Mumbai, RRP Group operates through multiple entities focused on semiconductors, defence systems, drones, and aerospace technologies. RRP Defense has steadily expanded its footprint in India’s defence technology sector through investments in:
-
Electro-optics and thermal imaging systems
-
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms
-
Semiconductor-linked technologies
-
Precision optical engineering
The company designs and develops a range of indigenous electro-optical solutions, including thermal imaging sights, thermal cameras, reflex sights, surveillance systems, and defence-grade optical equipment. Its growing expertise in precision optics is well-aligned with the government’s push for defence self-reliance.
Export Orders and International Collaborations
Beyond the BEL order, RRP Defense has also secured a contract from a friendly neighbouring country to export 100 drones along with electro-optical systems for $20 million , with a part of the order already executed last month. Additionally, the company is in talks with BEL for designing multiple sights in partnership with Israel’s Meprolight to offer next-generation electro-optics, night-vision devices, and weapon-sight systems to the Indian market.
