Overview

Prime Minister Modi visits Surat on 5 June 2026 to launch highway projects worth ₹12,421 crore. He will open two expressway sections and lay foundations for four new highways. The projects will boost connectivity in South Gujarat, cut travel time, and improve access to tribal districts and the Statue of Unity.

A Day of Development

On 5 June 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Surat, Gujarat. The visit coincides with  World Environment Day . On this day, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for  National Highway projects worth ₹12,421 crore  in South Gujarat. These projects aim to strengthen connectivity, improve freight movement, and support economic growth in the state's tribal, industrial, and coastal regions.

Inauguration: New Sections of Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway

The PM will inaugurate two packages of the  Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway  — the  36-km Kim–Ena section  (Package VI) and the  27.5-km Gandeva–Ena section  (Package VII). Built at a combined cost of  ₹7,689 crore , these eight-lane stretches are part of the larger Delhi-Mumbai Expressway corridor.

The project includes a network of major and minor bridges, railway overbridges, flyovers, and vehicle underpasses. A total of  70 underpasses and two interchanges  have been constructed to ensure smooth local movement without disrupting expressway traffic. To enhance safety and convenience for long-distance travellers,  seven well-equipped wayside amenities  will be developed along both packages.

Key benefits:

  • Faster travel and improved regional connectivity

  • Reduced logistics costs for local industries

  • Improved freight movement along the Delhi-Mumbai corridor

  • Alignment with the objectives of the  Bharatmala Project

Foundation Laid: Four NHAI Projects Worth ₹4,732 Crore

In addition to the expressway inauguration, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for four National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects valued at  ₹4,732 crore . These include:

1. Four-Laning of NH-56 (Two Sections)

  • Dhamasiya–Bitada/Movi section  (Package IV)

  • Nasarpore–Malotha section  (Package VI)
    Total length:  107.67 km

Key benefits:

  • Travel time reduction:  Journey time will be cut by  40 minutes , and average speeds will increase by  75% .

  • Enhanced connectivity:  The corridor will connect pharma and medical clusters, fishing and seafood hubs, tribal regions, and key logistics nodes — including  one airport, two railway stations, and two ports .

  • Boost to tourism:  The upgraded NH-56 will improve access to the  Statue of Unity , a major national tourist destination located about 11 km from the highway.

  • Tribal development:  The project passes through the  Aspirational District of Narmada  and will strengthen connectivity to tribal areas in  Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Tapi, and Bharuch  districts.

  • Employment generation:  The project is expected to generate  19.38 lakh man-days of direct employment  and  22.82 lakh man-days of indirect employment  during construction.

2. Hazira Port-Surat Connectivity Projects (₹149 crore)

Two projects worth about  ₹149 crore  will be taken up on the  Hazira Port-Surat section of NH-53 :

  • Six-lane flyover

  • Vehicular underpass

These will ensure smooth movement of heavy goods vehicles towards Hazira Port and nearby industrial areas. The projects will support maritime trade, reduce congestion, and improve road safety for Surat residents.

Additionally, foundation stones will be laid for two more structures on the Surat-Hazira stretch of NH-53:

  • six-lane vehicular underpass near Reliance

  • vehicular underpass-cum-flyover at Kawas

These projects will help ease traffic pressure in the high-density industrial zone around Hazira Port and improve overall transport efficiency.

A Boost for South Gujarat

Together, these projects will transform the infrastructure landscape of South Gujarat. They will:

  • Provide seamless connectivity to tribal districts and aspirational areas

  • Boost industrial growth by improving freight movement

  • Enhance tourist access to the Statue of Unity

  • Generate significant employment during construction

  • Reduce travel time and improve road safety

The NH-56 upgradation, once completed, will provide continuous four-lane connectivity from Bodeli to Malotha, easing congestion and enhancing links to NH-53, NH-48, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.

Conclusion

PM Modi's visit to Surat on World Environment Day underscores the government's commitment to building world-class infrastructure that drives economic growth while respecting environmental sustainability. The ₹12,421 crore highway projects will not only shorten travel times but also open up new opportunities for trade, tourism, and tribal development in Gujarat.
