Prime minister Narendra Modi gave a national address to reiterate the necessity of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was earlier criticized by other opponents who dubbed it as the Gabbar Singh Tax. Modi emphasized that his government did not introduce a new charge known as GST but a major overhaul of an already disjointed system of levies including sales tax, VAT, excise duty and octroi.

The new GST rates on clothes in India have been a welcomed reprieve to shoppers in different parts of the country because they have come into effect on September 22, 2025. The relocation, which is meant to reduce the cost burden on consumers, is favorable to middle class right before the festive season.
