NASA Picks Blue Origin to Deliver Moon Rovers for New Lunar Base

to the Moon. The first crewed landing is planned for 2029. This system will be an alternative to SpaceX's Starship. Having two different systems gives NASA more options.

A New Era of Moon Exploration

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman called the Moon Base "America's and humanity's first outpost on another celestial world". Lori Glaze, a NASA leader, said: "Through Artemis, we are going. And with Moon Base, we're going to stay".

The Moon is a very harsh place. In sunlight, it can get over 250 degrees Fahrenheit. In darkness, it can drop below minus-200 degrees. In some craters, it is even colder. There is no air to protect from radiation or meteorites. Building a base there will be very hard. But NASA believes it is worth the effort. The Moon is a stepping stone to Mars.

A: NASA announced the contract on 26 May 2026.

Q2: How much is the Blue Origin contract worth?
A: The contract includes a 188millionbaseperiod.Anoptionperiodadds188millionbaseperiod.Anoptionperiodadds280.4 million. The total could reach $468 million.

Q3: Which companies are building the rovers?
A: Astrolab is building the CLV-1 rover. Lunar Outpost is building the Pegasus rover.

Q4: Where will the rovers land on the Moon?
A: They will land at the Shackleton Connecting Ridge, near the lunar South Pole.

Q5: Why is NASA building a base at the lunar South Pole?
A: The South Pole has permanently shadowed craters. These craters may contain water ice. Water ice can be used for drinking and for making rocket fuel.
