Spiritual and Civilisational Ties
On the first day of his visit, President U Min Aung Hlaing traveled to Bodh Gaya in Bihar. He offered prayers at the sacred Mahabodhi Temple and meditated under the revered Bodhi Tree, where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment. He also visited the Sujata Temple and the Burmese Monastery. The visit underscores the deep spiritual and civilisational ties between India and Myanmar, rooted in a shared Buddhist heritage.
Geopolitical Significance: Countering China and Security Imperatives
Analysts view the visit as part of New Delhi's efforts to counterbalance China's growing influence in Myanmar. Russia and China have been key allies of Myanmar's military leadership, and India is now strengthening its engagement to secure access to Myanmar's critical rare earth deposits and bolster security along its northeastern borders. The relationship is strategically important for India, which shares a long land border with Myanmar.
Trade and Connectivity: Infrastructure as a Bridge
India and Myanmar have strong cooperation in trade and infrastructure. Bilateral trade between the two countries stood at US $1.95 billion in 2025-26. Key connectivity projects include:
-
Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project : A $484 million project designed to connect India's eastern seaports to its landlocked northeastern states via the Bay of Bengal, effectively bypassing the narrow Siliguri Corridor.
-
India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway :
