Overview
India and Vietnam held two important meetings in May 2026. One was in New Delhi on 6 May. The other was in Hanoi on 19 May. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Vietnam’s Defence Minister Phan Van Giang discussed maritime security, military training, and defence manufacturing. The two countries also signed a new agreement on artificial intelligence and quantum technology. This shows their strong and growing friendship.
A Strong Defence Partnership
India and Vietnam have been close friends for many years. They first started a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2016. Later, they made it even stronger. They called it the Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both countries talk to each other regularly. They also share training and naval visits. This helps keep the Indo-Pacific region peaceful and stable.
Focus on Maritime Security
The sea is very important for both India and Vietnam. They discussed how to keep sea lanes safe. Sea lanes are the routes ships use for trade. They also talked about coastal surveillance. That means keeping an eye on the coastline. Both sides agreed to do more joint exercises and port calls. Port calls are when naval ships visit another country’s port for friendly visits or training.
Defence Industry and New Technology
India and Vietnam want to work together on building defence equipment. They discussed joint research, co‑development, and co‑production. This means they will design and make military products together. On 19 May 2026, they also exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on artificial intelligence and quantum technology. These are very advanced fields. This MoU will help both countries become stronger in future technologies.
Help in Defence Education
The two ministers did something special on 19 May 2026. They jointly inaugurated a Language Laboratory at the Vietnam Air Force Officer College. This lab will help Vietnamese officers learn languages. India also provides training support and other educational help to Vietnam’s defence forces. This shows that their cooperation is not just about weapons. It is also about people and knowledge.
