A Fully Digital Dispute Resolution System
The most exciting part of the new rules is that the National Sports Tribunal will operate digitally. The Sports Ministry has proposed a completely online system. This means:
-
Disputes can be filed online through a dedicated portal
-
Notices and documents can be submitted digitally
-
Hearings will be held virtually (video conferencing)
-
All communication from the tribunal will be online
-
Orders and judgments will be published on a dedicated portal
-
All records will be maintained digitally
This is a huge improvement. An athlete sitting in a small town can now file a dispute without travelling to Delhi or a state capital. They can attend a hearing from their home. They can see the tribunal’s decision online. This makes the system faster, cheaper, and more accessible.
Why This Matters for Indian Sports
Indian sports have been held back by governance problems. Many sports federations have faced allegations of corruption, age fraud, and mismanagement. Athletes have suffered because of arbitrary selections. Elections have been contested in courts for years. The new system will solve many of these problems.
Here are some expected benefits:
-
Faster resolution of disputes – No more waiting for years.
-
Lower legal costs – Online hearings save travel and lawyer fees.
-
Improved transparency – All orders are published online.
-
Better access for athletes and federations – Anyone with internet can use the system.
-
Reduced burden on traditional courts – Civil courts can focus on other cases.
This reform also aligns with India’s broader push for digital governance. Just like tax filing and court cases are going online, sports disputes will now be resolved online.
How Members Will Be Selected
The government has set up a Search-cum-Selection Committee to appoint members of the NSB and NST. This committee will be headed by the Cabinet Secretary, the highest-ranking civil servant in India. This ensures that appointments are fair and transparent. There will be no political interference or backroom deals. The selection process will be open and based on merit.
A New Chapter for Indian Sports
The notification of these rules is a major milestone. The National Sports Governance Act was passed last year. Now the operational rules are ready. This means the National Sports Board and the National Sports Tribunal can actually start functioning. Sports bodies must now register with the NSB. They must follow its governance code. If they do not, they can lose recognition. Athletes and officials can approach the NST for any dispute.
This is not just a legal reform. It is a cultural change. It tells every athlete that
