Overview
On April 2026, Narendra Modi and Lee Jae-myung signed 16 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance bilateral cooperation in the key areas. The partnership aims at increasing trade to 54 billion dollars by the year 2030, which is an indication of strengthening of economic and technological relationships in the face of global supply chain disruptions.
Trade Target and CEPA Upgrade
The current India- South Korea trade is approximately at 27 billion. The two countries target almost 18 percent growth per annum in order to increase it to twice that amount. To support this, they plan to upgrade the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by:
-
Reducing non-tariff barriers
-
Simplifying rules of origin
-
Enhancing market access
-
Enabling the ease of doing business.
Concentrate on Future-Oriented Industries.
The MoUs focus on the high growth areas that are of crucial importance in the global competitiveness in the future:
- Semiconductors and electronics
- Electric mobility and batteries.
- Building ships and high-technology production.
- E-commerce and renewable energy.
It is also intended to develop a special Korea-specific industrial township with plug and play infrastructure to entice investments and enhance manufacturing cooperation.
Justice Clean Energy and Climate Cooperation.
The two countries settled on cooperation in terms of the Paris Agreement Article 6.2, which allows both countries to engage in carbon trading and emission-cutting alliances.
- India reiterated the goal of net-zero by 2070.
- South Korea has a net-zero target of 2050.
Renewable energy, green hydrogen and battery technology in joint efforts will improve energy security and decrease fossil fuel reliance.
Strategic Economic Context
The agreement follows the global inflation pressures, geopolitical tensions, and disruptions in the supply chain. The parallel trade talks with the United States imply that India is going to have a wider approach to diversify economic associations and enhance resilience in the world trade systems.
