Gujarat Launches ‘Lake and Air Watch’ Initiative for Urban Environmental Monitoring

Satellite-Based Lake and Air Quality Monitoring Introduced Under Gujarat Urban Development Mission

The state of Gujarat has launched the ‘Lake and Air Watch’ initiative to strengthen environmental monitoring in urban areas. The programme has been introduced under the Gujarat Urban Development Mission (GUDM) by the state’s Urban Development and Urban Housing Department. The initiative aims to track the health of urban lakes and monitor air quality in real time , contributing to the development of environmentally resilient cities aligned with the national vision of Viksit Bharat .

Addressing Urban Environmental Concerns

Rapid urban expansion has led to growing ecological challenges in cities, including deteriorating air quality, polluted water bodies and reduced groundwater recharge . Urban lakes often face problems such as waste accumulation, siltation and declining water quality.

The ‘Lake and Air Watch’ programme aims to address these issues by integrating monitoring systems across multiple departments, allowing authorities to identify environmental problems quickly and coordinate timely responses .

Satellite-Based Monitoring of Lakes

A key component of the initiative is the use of satellite technology to assess the condition of lakes. The monitoring system will track indicators such as changes in water spread area, waste accumulation and algae growth .

Whenever unusual changes are detected, automated alerts will be generated, enabling authorities to take immediate conservation or restoration measures . This approach is expected to support long-term protection of urban water bodies and prevent further environmental degradation.

Real-Time Air Quality Monitoring

The programme also includes the creation of a real-time air quality monitoring network . Monitoring stations will be installed across 17 municipal corporations and 152 municipalities in Gujarat. These stations will continuously measure the Air Quality Index (AQI) and provide real-time updates.

If pollution levels exceed safe thresholds, the system will issue alerts to authorities so that immediate measures can be taken to control emissions and improve air quality .

Integrated Digital Dashboard

Data collected under the initiative will be compiled through a centralised digital platform at the state level . The dashboard will display environmental indicators, maps, alerts and analytical trends to support better decision-making.

The information will also be accessible to the public, promoting transparency, citizen awareness and participation in environmental protection.
