India’s New Military Era: Lt Gen Subramani Takes Over as Chief of Defence Staff
The role of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is the highest military appointment in India. It was created to provide the government with a single-point military adviser. This ensures better coordination among the three services: the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force.
General Anil Chauhan’s Tenure
General Anil Chauhan completed his term as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on May 30, 2026. He had held the position since September 28, 2022. His tenure was later extended by the government. On September 24, 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension, allowing him to serve as India’s top military officer until May 30, 2026. This extension provided stability and momentum for ongoing defense reforms.
During his tenure, General Chauhan was a key figure in the government's push for deeper tri-services integration and theaterisation —the process of unifying the capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force into unified commands to fight future wars more effectively. His leadership was widely praised for its focus on technology adoption and enhancing jointness among the forces.
The Ceremonial Guard of Honour
On the morning of May 30, 2026, the lawns of the South Block in New Delhi became the stage for a traditional and poignant farewell. The South Block houses key offices of the Ministry of Defence and the Cabinet Secretariat. General Anil Chauhan was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour to mark the culmination of his tenure.
The ceremony was dignified and impressive. It was a tri-services guard, meaning contingents from the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force participated. This showcased the very integration the CDS post was created to achieve. Senior military leaders, including the three service chiefs and Vice Chief of Naval Staff Ajay Kochhar, were in attendance to bid farewell to their colleague and commander. Reflecting on his years of service, General Chauhan described his time as the CDS as a "very satisfying, excellent tenure".
General N.S. Raja Subramani Takes Charge
The transition was well-planned. The Government of India officially named Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani (Retd.) as the next Chief of Defence Staff on May 9, 2026. He formally took over the reins from General Anil Chauhan following the latter's retirement. Before his appointment, General Subramani was serving as the Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), a position he held since September 1, 2025. He also previously served as the 47th Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 2024 to July 2025 and commanded the Army’s Central Command as its General Officer Commanding-in-Chief from March 2023 to June 2024.
Vision for the Future
After taking charge, General Subramani immediately outlined his priorities. He received his own ceremonial Guard of Honour at the South Block Lawns on May 31, 2026. In his first address, he emphasized that the "transformation and reforms of the Armed Forces" would be his primary focus. He reiterated that self-reliance, or Atma Nirbharta , is a central pillar of India's
