With Vijay becoming CM, Tamil Nadu saw the end of nearly six decades of rule by two parties: DMK and AIADMK.

A Historic Victory That Reshapes Politics

Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), changed the political face of Tamil Nadu. Vijay founded TVK himself. In the 2026 Assembly elections, TVK became the single largest party. It won 108 seats on its own. With support from its alliance partners, the coalition crossed the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly. In total, the coalition had the support of 120 MLAs.

The following parties are supporting TVK’s coalition government:

  • CPI (Communist Party of India)

  • CPI(M) (Communist Party of India – Marxist)
